~ Ill llllllllllllllll ~
STATE OF COLORADO
Roy Romer, Governor
r ~~
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
FRED R, BANTA, Dlreetor
DATE: January 4, 1989
T0: Steve Renner
FROM: John T. Doerfer ~/v
RE: Adequacy Review, Battle Mountain Resources, San Luis Project,
File No. M-88-112
As you requested, I have reviewed selected sections of the Battle Mountain
permit application for the San Luis Project. The sections I reviewed
concerned waste rock and tailing geochemistry, water balance, pond and heap
design, culvert and diversion design, and surface water hydrology. My
comments following review are provided below for inclusion in the adequacy
letter.
D.3.3.2 - Waste Rock Geochemistry
1. The results from the humidity-cell test of the interburden indicate
sulfate concentrations to vary significantly from week to week. How can
this behavior be explained? Why do the cumulative sulfate data reported
not appear to be additive throughout the test period?
2. The individual tests performed on the interburden, overburden, and the
waste rock along the fault zone indicate the interburden to have a slight
potential for acid production. Will these materials be segregated or
combined during waste rock disposal? If they are handled separately,
what mitigation is proposed to insure the interburden will not. be
acid-forming? If the waste rock is combined during disposal, what is the
projected composite effect for acid-producing potential?
D.6.2.2 - Tailings Geochemistry
3. What effect would the dilute sulfuric acid used in the batch tests have
on the sulfate concentrations reported in the tailings analyses? Can
these sulfate data be considered representative?
4. Results for cyanide analysis indicate free cyanide to be greater than
total cyanide for Tailings Sample Number 1. As this condition can not
physically exist, please explain.
215 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tef. (303) 866-3567
