III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
~ 999
.S ~ ~ Doc Date:12/11/2001
2.04.09
SOIL RESOURCE INFORMATION
Soils
The soil of the Blue Flame Coal Mine disturbed area has been mostly
removed by grading and construction work. Coal and waste rock have been mixed
into or replaced the original soils of the mine bench. No top soil has been
saved or stored from the disturbed mine bench. Coal mining operations have
been ongoing here for well over thirty (30) years. No thought for saving the
original soils was made. However, the land surrounding the approximately 4.1
disturbed acres has remained relatively untouched with the original soils
intact. Soils of these areas have been surveyed and delineated into two (2)
soil mapping units.
The Soil Conservation Service has mapped and recorded site-specific
data on the physical and chemical properties of these soils. The soil types
are shown on the Soil Map and also on the accompanying photo of the mine site.
' Soil Mapping Unit Descriptions
Zau Stony Loam, ]2 to 65 Percent S1
This package consists of a shallow, well-drained soil on sandstone
breaks of moderately steep to steep upland mesas, and areas of sandstone out-
crops. The average annual precipitation is ]4 to ]7 inches. The average
annual air temperature is 47 to 50 degrees. The frost-free season is ]]0 tc
]30 days.
The Zau Stony Loam soil makes up ]00 percent of the unit. The Zau
Stony Loam soil formed as residual material from sandstone and shale. The soil
on the bushy hillside is Zua Stony Loam on about 40 percent slope. It is
classified as a fine, mixed Typic Argiboroll. A typical pedon description
follows:
0 to 8 inches; dark grayish brown stony loam
8 to ]3 inches; brown clay loam
• ]3 to 32 inches; brown and yellowish brown clay
~..., _ ~~
