Surface water
• Undisturbed runoff is diverted around the West Portal, East Portal,
and loadout facilities. A small acreage exemption has been applied for the
proposed air intake shaft surface disturbance. Detailed information on the
design of the diversions and sedimentation pond is contained in Section
4.05.5, Appendix XXI, and Exhibits 2.05.3-B through 2.05.3-I.
Currently, portions of the disturbed lands drain into the East Mine
sedimentation pond, the Substation pond, and the Norris pond. It is
planned that the rest of the disturbed area will be drained into the East
Mine Laydown pond and the U.S. Steel pond. The construction of these ponds
is awaiting approval by the regulatory authority. Discharge from the ponds
is from surface runoff due to snowmelt or thunderstorms. Occasionally pum-
page from the mine is necessary to clean the face working area. These
• ponds are covered by NPDES permit number CO-0033146. The only treatment of
the water is by settling until the following effluent limitations are met:
Instant Max.
Total Suspended Solids
pH
Total Iron
70 mq/1
6.0
7.0 mg/1
30 Day Ave.
35 mg/1
9.0
3.5 mg/1
To date the disturbance of 34 acres in the 339,840 acre watershed of
the North Fork of the Gunnison River has had no measurable affect on the
quantity or quality of the North Fork. Therefore, no water rights have
been affected.
Final reclamation of the surface disturbance is covered in Section
2.05.4. The reclaimed ephemeral gulch channels will be rock-lined so that
•
2.05-59
