e
ESPEY, HUSTON AASSOCIATES, INC.
•
Densi
Snowberry is the most prevalent shrub in this community with a density
of 5,024 shrub patches per acre. Other major shrubs aze Douglas rabbitbrush (960
shrubs per acre), serviceberry (746 shrub clumps per acre), big sagebrush (716 shrubs
per acre) and Gambel oak (543 shrubs per acre). Other common shrubs include
rubber rabbitbrush (257 shrubs per acre) and Woods rose (169 shrubs per acre). Other
shrubs occurring in this community at low densities or that did sot occur in the
sample quadrats are mountain mahogany, myrtle pachistima, chokecherry, antelope
bitterbrush, skunkbrush sumac and wax currant. Seedling production is high for
snowberry and serviceberry (see Table K-6).
Mean shrub heights vary from a high 85 centimeters for serviceberry to
11 centimeters for Douglas rabbitbrush. The mean height of oak is 54 centimeters.
Myrtle pachistima, antelope bitterbrush and skunkbrush sumac were not encountered
often enough to accurately estimate their mean heights.
Productivity
The estimated ANP of clipped plots within the mountain shrub com-
munity ranges from 14.4 grams per squaze meter to 233.9 grams per squaze meter
and averages 102.7 grams per square meter or 927 pounds per acre per yeaz. Shrubs
accounted for 30.0 grams per squaze meter (29 percent) of the total biomass.
Graminoids produce 43.0 grams per squaze meter (42 percent) and (orbs produce 29.8
grams per square meter (29 percent) of the total biomass. Snowberry is the major
producer of shrub biomass of those shrubs clipped. Western wheatgrass and
bluegrass are the major grass producers (see Table K-7). This community produces
an estimated 0.4 AUM per acre.
•
K-26
