Shrubs present on the area but not encountered on transects were <br />chokecherry and wax currant. <br />Cool season mid-grasses aze the dominant graminoids. Lettermans <br />needlegrass (Stipa lettermanii), a bunchgrass with a cover of 6.4 percent, and <br />Canada bluegrass . (Pon compressa), a sod grass with a cover of 5.1 percent, aze <br />dominant. Western wheatgrass (Agropyron smithii) and bluegrass (Pon agassizensis) <br />are common grasses with 3.7 and 2.1 percent cover, respectively. Basin wildrye <br />(Elymus cinereus), a tall perennial bunchgrass, forms small clumps in moist sites <br />scattered throughout this community. Other graminoids present but infrequent <br />include: Baltic rush (Juncos azcticus), fieldclustered sedge (Cazex praegracilis), <br />Thurber fescue (Festuca thurberi), Indian ricegrass (Oryzopsis hymenoides) and elk <br />sedge (Cazex cf. geyeri). <br />The forb cover is chazacterized by perennial species. Dominant forbs <br />• aze Pacific aster (8.0 percent cover), as aggressive colonizer of disturbed soils and <br />mountain lupine (Lupinus ammophilus) (7.6 percent cover), a tall forb favoring <br />disturbed habitats. Other common forbs include: western yazrow (Achillea lanulosa) <br />(4.8 percent cover) and prairie sedge (Artemisia ludoviciana) (4.5 percent cover). <br />Shrub Density and Height <br />Big sagebrush is the most common shrub in this community (2,881 plants <br />per acre) followed by rubber rabbitbrush (1,026 plants per acre), Douglas rabbitbrush <br />(771 plants per acre), mountain snowberry (680 plants per acre) and Woods rose (641 <br />plants per acre). Shrubs occurring infrequently aze serviceberry (65 plants per acre) <br />and chokecherry (5 plants per acre). Wax currant was present in the sample area, <br />but did not occur in the sample quadrat. Seedling production is high for big <br />sagebrush (356 plants per acre). Mean shrub canopy height ranged from 48 <br />centimeters for big sagebrush to 23 centimeters for Woods rose (see Table K-4). <br />u <br />K-20 <br />
