eh ESPEY, HUSTON 3ASSOCIATES, INC.
•
meter quadrat was used for estimating tall shrubs, while a 2-squaze meter quadrat
was used for short shrubs. All shrub species were inventoried in the lazge quadrat
with the exception of Woods rose (Rosa woodsii), snowberry (Symphoricazpos
oreophilus) and wax currant (Ribes cereum).
The density of shrub seedlings was determined for each species by
counting the number of individual shrub seedlings per quadrat. A shrub less than 10
centimeters in height was considered to be a seedling for all species except
chokecherry (Prunus virginiana), oak (Quercus gambelii) and serviceberry
(Amelanchier utahensis). For these three shrubs a seedling was defined as a plant
less than 50 centimeters in height. Seedlings were not recorded far myrtle
pachistima (Pachistima myrsinites), as it is such a low shrub. The density of
serviceberry and snowberry was determined by counting the number of clumps or
patches rather than the number of individual stems.
• 2.2.4 Collection and Analysis of Productivity Data
During May and eazly June, 1979, productivity exclosures were erected
in each plant community selected for study. A USGS map and compass were used to
precisely locate each exclosure at the previously determined (randomly) sample site.
Exclosures were conical in shape, constructed from wire, and secured with four
5-foot sections of rebaz. Each exclosure secured approximately 11,664 squaze
centimeters from grazing.
Exclosures were clipped during July, August or September. A circulaz
metal hoop 10,000 square centimeters in azea was placed over the vegetation
subsequent to removal of the exclosure. All vegetation within the hoop was clipped.
Vegetation was sorted by individual shrub and graminoid and a general forb
category. All shrubs were clipped except oak, chokecherry and serviceberry. Only
the current yeaz's growth was clipped on shrubs. Plant clippings were oven dried at
105°C for 24 hours and weighed to the neazest tenth gram. Final results were
•
R-7
