• 2.05.3
All buildings were constructed using conventional structural steel framing and enclosed with steel
siding. Floors were constructed using grating, checkered-plate or concrete decks. Foundations
for all structures are of reinforced concrete.
All conveyors are enclosed by steel siding or corrugated steel conveyor enclosures.
Most of these existing structures were utilized in the coal processing, coal transportation and train
loading of coal from the West Mine.
Sewage Treatment Plant
A sewage treatment plant (elevation 6950 feet) manufactured by Environmental Conditioners
Incorporated handles all waste from the mine site. It is a biological treatment system for
biodegradable wastes using the extended aeration modiScation of the activated sludge process.
This process combines the features of complete treatment with low sludge production. The Envi-
ronmental Conditioners Incorporated plant uses the novel technique of turbine mixing plus sparge
diffuser aeration, which gives significantly higher oxygenation transfer rates than that provided by
diffused aeration systems. This allows higher volumetric BOD loadings and smaller aeration
volume. It also gives independent control of aeration over varying waste load conditions without
sacrificing good mixing.
• The plant construction was completed in 1976. (For details of the Sewage Treatment Plant see
Sewer Plant Appendix in Volume SA.)
Train Loadout Sewage Treatment Plant
An individual home sewage treatment plant is constructed at the storage and load-out facilities
(elevation 5710 feet). The plant treats the waste water from the sanitary and shower facilities
within the train load-out building which serves approximately four persons per day.
The plant employs a biochemical action in which aerobic bacteria break down and oxidize sewage
using the oxygen in solution. It's patented design incorporates three separate compartments, each
performing a specific function in the total purification process.
(For details of Sewage Treatment Plant see Sewer Plant Appendix in Volume 8A.) The Plant
construction was completed in 1976.
Other Facilities
Waste Oil Containment Structure
A 10,000 gallon waste oil tank, measuring 8 feet in diameter and 27 feet in length, is located at
the crushing and screening level. Waste oil is poured into a 4 inch pipe at the bench level
• immediately above the tank. The fluid is transported through the pipe to the 10,000 gallon tank.
A containment structure, measuring approximately 4 feet (height) by 61 feet (length) by 19 feet
TR-32 - 23 - 9/99
~,8/00
