Land Use
The proposed mining site is agricultural land used for crop-
land and pasture. Surrounding land is also agricultural.
There have been a variety of sand and gravel operations in the
vicinity over a period of at least 20 years. A lake in the
southern part of the site was created by sand and gravel
mining in the 1950 ' s. Two pits to the southwest have been
mined for sand and gravel. There are currently 2 active mining
operations within 2 miles of the site, and Flatiron is mining
ithe site under a 1974 permit from the Mined Land Reclamation
' Board. Neighbors have publicly stated that they have no ob-
jection to sand and gravel mining at the Nelson Pit.
Other land uses include oil and gas exploration, with wells
in place within a half mile to the west, and railroad facilities,
the closest being the Burlington Northern line running southwest
to northeast about mile to the east. Approximately mile
south is a radio tower.
The Nelson site will be used as a private recreation and wildlife
area when mining is completed.
1
1
' A-2
