There are no recreational facilities on the permit area; however, the
• general area provides opportunities for dispersed activities such as fishing,
hunting, viewing wildlife, and hiking. The permit area is located in Colorado
Division of Wildlife (DOW) Big Game Management Unit 521. The primary hunting
resource is mule deer since the area is an important winter range for deer;
however, small game hunting is also a recreational use. The North Fork
Gunnison River also provides a recreational trout fishery with populations of
rainbows, browns, and cutthroats. The area along the mine, however, is not
regularly stocked by the DOW.
The nearest community to the permit area is Somerset, Colorado (popula-
tion 150) located approximately 1.5 miles west on Highway 133. Two nonincor-
porated residential dwellings are located along the southern boundary of the
permit area (Daniel John and Kermit C. Claytor). Mine development is not
• anticipated in these areas due to their location in relation to the North Fork
Gunnison River and Highway 133.
3. Cultural and Historic Resources
Cultural and historic resource information and clearance for the permit
area are included in Appendix D. The only item of note found locally was the
Oliver Power Plant. This idle powerplant is outside Western Slope Carbon's
permit area on land owned by Colorado Ute Electric Association.
4. Wildlife and Aquatic Resources
a. Wildlife Resources.
