One apparent raptor nest is located within a cottonwood tree along the
Florida River near the mid-portion of the property. It is unknown what specie:.
may occupy this nest as no field investigations of the area were conducted during
the nesting period for raptors. Irrigated aeeas and associated ponds-including the
river on the property may offer migratory rest areas for waterfowl, fisheries, and
grazing/foraging areas for game species (elk, deer, waterfowl, etc.).
(b) The property is within summer and severe winter range as designated by the
CDOW for mule deer, as well as severe winter range for elk. The property is
most heavily used by mule deer both through the summer and winter months.
Ponds and irrigated fields may be used by migrating waterfowl through the fal
months and the entire property is likely used by a variety of migrating bird species
for food, nesting (particularly in the pinion-juniper habitats of the property), and
cover during the early spring to mid-summer months.
(c) The United Stated Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) lists 16 species as
threatened, endangered, or candidates for listing within the exterior boundaries of
the Southern Ute Indian Reservation. Of those 16 species listed as threatened,
endangered, or candidates for listing, Six (6) of these are unlikely to occur in the
applied permit property as the area either does not provide habitat for these
species or it is outside of their known range. They are: Eskimo Curfew, Boreat
Toad, Uncompahgre fritillary butterfly, Colorado pikeminnow, razorback sucker
and whooping crane. Seven (7) of
the threatened, and endangered species and both of the candidate species are
unlikely to occur in the applied permit property as the project area either does tot
provide habitat for these species, or no individuals of the species are known to
occur or have been observed within the area. These species are; Mexican spot ed
owl, southwestern willow flycatcher, black-footed ferret, Canada lynx, Manco>
milk-vetch, Knowlton's cactus, Gunnison sage-grouse, Yellow-billed cuckoo, and
the Mesa Verde Cactus.
The bald eagle, listed by the USFWS and CDOW as threatened, could occur it
the project area as cottonwoods within the property could support roosting
Bos 4470
Durango, Colorado 8]302
