GLOSSARY <br />• <br />ALLuviation The deposition of sediment by moving <br />water. <br />ALtithermal Between 7500 BP and 5000 BP. The alti- <br />thermal maximum (7500-6500 BP) had warmer <br />summers, reduced winter precipitation, and <br />decreased snow redistribution. The Late <br />altithermal (6500-5000 BP) saw vegetation <br />zones depressed several hundred meters, <br />suggesting a cooler and wetter climate. <br />Other data suggest a warmer and moister <br />climate (Benedict 1976). <br />Anticline A sharply arched fold of stratified rock <br />from whose central axis the strata slope <br />downward in opposite directions (American <br />Geological Institute 1976). <br />Artifact Primordial object devised, produced, or <br />modified by man (Crabtree 1972). <br />Assemblage The total collection of various artifact <br />types and technologies present in one • <br />' component of an archaeological site. <br />Biface An artifact bearing flake scars on both <br />surfaces (Crabtree 1972). <br />Biface Reduction oar A flake which was produced during biface <br />Thinning Flake manufacture. <br />Bifacial The presence of something on both faces of <br />an artifact. Usually use-wear or flaking <br />pattern <br />BP Before Present. Measured in years posed <br />on the decay of radioactive carbon <br />Present is defined as 1950. <br />Campsite An archaeological site at which habitation <br />took place. <br />Chronology The time framework into which a culture <br />history fits. <br />Core Piece of raw material from which flakes <br />have been or wiLL.be removed. <br />Corner-Notched A projectile point with flaked indentations • <br />proceeding from the corners of the base <br />inward. <br />38 <br />
