(either as a portion of an Archaic assemblage, or as a
definite Paleo-Indian occupation).
The literature review has identified a number of
sources relating to the archaeology of the study area. Each
of these studies has exhibited a different research orien-
tation. Several problems have been identified, but no
comprehensive understanding is available due to a lack of
an areal research design. Since the region lacks a compre-
hensive research framework and corresponding fieldwork,
it is not possible to make a predictive statement of what
one would expect to encounter within the study area.
Therefore, fieldwork was initiated with the hope of adding
to the regional data base, and with the research questions
previously mentioned in mind, but with no specifically formu-
Lated hypotheses to test.
