i
The Clovis point is the hallmark of the beginning of
the better defined portion of the Paleo-Indian period. Begin-
ning about 12,000 ESP, this portion of the Paleo-Indian period
is marked by the hunting of Large Pleistocene mammals and the
use of large, lanceolate projectile points. This pattern
of big game Hunting; apparently persisted after the extinc-
tion of the large mammals until about 7000,BP (Windmiller
and Eddy 1976).
The Desert Archaic
The Desert Archaic is an Archiac adaptation to the acid
west and is defined primarily on the basis of the presence
of a larger number of tools involved in vegetable food pre-
paration, suggesting a heavier reliance on vegetable foods.
The Desert Archaic is centered in the Great Basin, and is
contemporaneous with portions of the Paleo-Indian period in
Wyoming to the north and the Plains to the east (Jennings 1968).
It appears to originate in the west (away from the study area)
where 8000 to 9000 BP seems a reasonable beginning (Jennings
1978). Danger Cave, a site on the banks of prehistoric
Lake Bonneville, provides a Desert Archaic date of 10,000 BP.
Dated Desert Archaic sites in Colorado appear to be much
Later, such as 3500 to 3000 BP at He11s Midden, a site in
Dinosaur National Monument(Jennings 1968).
The Archaic
The Archaic is defined in a similar manner to the Desert
Archaic. It is actually a continent-wide tradition, of which
all Archaic components are members. However, here it is
used to differentiate the Desert Archaic, which began earlier
and was adapted to .s more arid desert environment from the
Archaic present in the Colorado and Wyoming plains as well
as the Rocky Mountains.
•
10
