• 2.05.6
occurred February 17, 1978, is for the period of record from 1934 through
1995 and is measured upstream of the Town of Somerset, CO.
As explained in Section 2.04.7, the Bowie No. 2 Mine is experiencing an
inflow of approximately 30 g.p.m. Discharge records for the fourth quarter
of 2002 indicate the mine water has a TDS of approximately 1500 mg/I
(Reference BRL's discharge monitoring reports for Pond C). For the
purposes of this PHC a worst case mine inflow/discharge of 175 g.p.m. is
utilized. This is significantly more discharge than is expected from the
combined flows from the B-Seam and D-Seam.
The average TDS measurement at the upstream North Fork of the Gunnison
River monitoring station for the baseline period (2002 AHR) is 130 mg/I. The
average iron measurementatthe upstream North Fork of the Gunnison River
monitoring station for the baseline period (2002 AHR) is 0.10 mg/I. The
maximum iron in the mine discharge is 0.35 mg/I based on an 3/21/03 lab
• report for the preparation of DMRs. The following tables present the
estimated affect the mine discharge will have on the quality of water in the
North Fork of the Gunnison River:
PHC North Fork of the Gunnsion River
Flow m Flow cfs~ TDS m I Iron Trec, m /I
North Fork 11,220 25 130 0.10
Mine Dischar e 175 0.39 1500 0.35
Combined Flow 11,395 25.39 151 ~ 0.104
Based upon the above calculations, the mine discharge into the North Fork
of the Gunnison River will not have a measurable impact on the TDS or total
recoverable iron in the river.
The pH of the North Fork of the Gunnison River varies from 7.5 to 8.8
according to the 2002 AHR. The pH of the mine discharge water is in the 8.0
range. Therefore, the mine discharge water should not adversely affect the
pH in the North Fork of the Gunnison River
n
ICJ
PR-08 2.05 - 73 - 07/03
/~iPRovE~
9/zs/o3
