iii iiuii~i-~iii~~-

Doc Date:12H 1!2001
Revised 04/20/40
Section 780.18(b) Continued.

I~
Plan for Soil Storage - Kerr Mine Area
Although ideally soil removed from one area would be immediately
redistributed on an adjacent area being reclaimed, at the Kerr Mine
Area significant quantities of topsoil and subsoil, of necessity,
will be stockpiled. The estimated quantities of topsoil and subsoil
to be stockpiled are found in Table 69, Soil Removal and Storage
Plan. In this regard, all of the proposed stockpile areas identified
on Map 31a, Kerr Mine Area Soil Removal and Storage, result from
situations where contemporaneous redistribution is not possible
either because redistribution areas are not available at the time of
soil removal or because more soil is being removed than is needed for
contemporaneous redistribution.
Each proposed soil storage area identified on Map No. 31a, Kerr Mine
Area Soil Removal and Storage is divided into distinct topsoil and
subsoil stockpiles with one exception. (See Section 816.22-816.23.)
Topsoil and subsoil stockpiles are specifically sited to avoid
erosion from wind and water, and additional compaction or
contamination. As can be seen from the topsoil storage maps, all
present and major proposed stockpiles are located within stable areas
outside of drainage bottoms. Two small stockpiles will be located
adjacent to Williams and Bush Draws, but will be placed outside the
stream buffer zones. Refer to Map 31a, Kerr Mine Area Soil Removal
and Storage.
In addition to the physical protection afforded through appropriate
location, Kerr Coal proposes to implement additional measures to
prevent erosion once the stockpiles are in place. Specifically, for
stockpiles scheduled to be in place for only one growing season, a
rapidly growing cereal grain species such as oats or rye will be
780-66 as
