The surface can also be roughened by ripping the base, which may facilitate mixing the coarser, rocky material of
the spoil material with the gully bottom.
• The area upslope of excessive rills and gullies can also be manipulated to decrease the amount of water flowing into
existing rills and gullies. Such techniques include contour furrowing, staggered furrows, spreader dikes, diversion
ditches, ripping and mulching. These dispersion techniques may also be used downslope of or over the regraded
rills and gullies. Again, one or a combination of the previously mentioned techniques may be implemented for the
repair of excessive rills and gullies.
Diversion ditches may be installed in some instances to channel overland flow away from newly reclaimed areas.
Diversion ditches will be constructed as outlined in pages 28-13 through 28-15 of this Exhibit.
The Division may review ongoing survey, monitoring, and repair work during the field season at their convenience.
The following discussion of permanent drainageways consists of two parts. The first involves a demonstration that
gully formation at Mines 1, 2, and Eckman Park is a natural occurring process and the density of permanent
drainageways within the reclamation is no greater than surrounding, similar undisturbed areas. The second portion
addresses the stabilization and maintenance plan for permanent drainageways.
•

APPROVED OCT J ?. 1998
MR 98-88 28-6 ~, i~ 9/4/98
