• ARCHERY ELK SEASONS
A special elk license for bowhunting was established by the Legislature
and available in 1967, Prior to this time several small areas were open to
special archery elk seasons, but in 1967 the first general archery elk season
was authorized, statewide except in an area west of Rocky Mountain National
Park and on Cold Springs Mountain. From an estimated 500 archery elk hunters
in 1967 harvesting 63 animals, this type of sport hunting increased to a high
of 6,000 archery elk license sales in 1978, yielding a harvest of 750 elk for
a 13 per cent success ratio. In 1976, license sales dropped (especially for
nonresidents) to 3,720 and recovered to 4,790 after a significant license fee
increase. The harvest in 1977 was 663 elk for a success rate of 15 per cent.
Table 39 summarizes the license sales, hunter and harvest data for the
past 12 years.
•
.]
