Mr. Jack Haines
February 13, 1976
Page Two
SITE DESCRIPTION
Historical
~~
Prior to 1970 the property on which the ::ilyroe-Atchison
gravel mine is located was irrigated farm land. Figure 2
illustrates the agricultural situation of the site.
Approximately 65 acres, including land on the east'side of
the Old Brighton Road, were used to produce irrigated alfalfa.
There were also 55 acres of irrigated pasture on low land
adjacent to the rivo Water for irrigation was pumped from
three sumps, the S, rthing Springs Nos. 1, 2 and 3. Springs
Nos. 2 and 3 Caere man made lakes constructed to collect
underground water to ramp for irrigation. Spring NO. 1
collected surface water running in a draw near tl:e southern
portion of the site. The springs are discussed in more
detail in the Water Rights section of this report.
Existing
In the early 1970's, gravel mining began on the property
west of tl~e old ]~ighway. A~. the time of this report mining
has progressed to the approximate condition as shown on
Figure 3. The total surface arer of the lakes is 15.6 acres.
There is Y.resently no irrigation of any land on the property
including the land on the east side of the rive .
Future
Subject to renewal of the gravel mining permit, operations
are expected to continue in the present are.. as well as on
the low land adjacent to the river. Plo mining is planned
for the east. side of the old highway at this time.
WATER RIGHTS
Irrigation of the pror~ry was acc._mplished by pumping with
two 5 cfs capacity portable 4" Le Roy pumps powered by a
51 h.p. engine, from three sumps designated as the Worthing
Springs Nos. 1, 2 and 3. The Worthing Springs t7os. 1, 2
and 3 were claimed by Jack and Bertha Worthing in Filing P]o.
19772 accepted by the Office of the State Engineer of
Colorado on D7ay 28, 1954. The filing indicates the initial
development of the sumps was cgmmenced on April 1, 1954.
In 1969 17r. ~:~_thing thought action was taken to adjudicate
the water rights but no record of any proceeding could be
found either in the [•7ater Court in Greeley or the State
Engineer's Office. Consequently, there is no decree for
the water rights for the Worthing Springs.
