Straw is good, however. NRCS
recommends 4000 lbs. per acre.
• NRCS recommends elimination of Timothy from the species mix. This grass is best
adapted to elevations of 8000 ft. and therefore is not suitable in the Grand Valley
area.
. NRCS recommends that all seed be planted with a grass drill. Drilling provides the
best possibility for establishment. Slopes steeper than 4:1 probably will not be able
to be drilled.
Chances for seeding establishment will improve if irrigation water was available to
irrigate the seeded area for two or three seasons. Note that if sprinkler irrigation
were possible, mulching would still be essential for water retention and to reduce
possible compaction of soil material by the impact of water droplets from the
sprinkler nozzles.
Iflf y~ve an_ y more questions, please call.
~1.~ :._~,.~,
Jim Currier
District Conservationist
Grand Junction

The Natural Resources Conservation Service provides leadership in a partnership effort to help people
conserve, maintain, and improve our natural resources and environment.
An Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer
