Gregory Squire
Colorado Division of 1Sinarals and Geoiogy
--- 1313 Sharman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Dear Mr. Squire;
III IIIIIIIIIIIII III
999
I am writing to you in regard to the propoanl by Alpine Rock
to mine dredge tailings along the swan River in Summit County,
Colorado. The project involves the mining of dredge spoils
deposited along the Swan River during the gold mining operations
in the aeriy part of this century.
Based on a site inspection by Mr. Michael Clafley of this
office, we have determined that a Department of the Army permit
will not ba required for this project provided there is not any
discharge of dredged or fill material below ordinary high water
of the Swan River, or nxeavation within the Swan River after
September 24, 1997. In addition, it appeared that wetlands ware
not present within the proposed mining area; however, if wetlands
are present within the proposed mining area, a Department of the
Army permit would ba required for the discharge of dredged or
fill material into those wetlands, or for the excavation of those
wetland6 after September 2~, 1993.
We recommend that Alpine Rock reclaim at least a portion of
the dredge tailings ae wetlands when mining has bean completed.
wetlands Craated along the swan River would help to maintain and
improve the water quality of the stream. Examination of typical
river corridors in the area reveal that the floodplain of the
swan River waa probably dominated by wetlands prior to the gold
