3
• foot wide corridor was inventoried for the 2200 foot portion lying outside the previously inventoried
area amounting to approximately 23 surveyed acres.
A short portion of the proposed P3 haul road was realigned following the 1996 field season
in the upper portion of Jeff Canyon. The new alignment places it below the original alignment and
below the 7000 foot contour line which is the boundary for the 1996 surface mine survey area. The
new alignment was inventoried as a narrow triangular-shaped 90 acre block extending up from Jeff
Canyon creek to the 7000 foot contour line, and then east approximately one mile to an unnamed
ephemeral drainage.
Seven sedimentation ponds and four fill areas are proposed for the mine site. Sedimentation
ponds 002 and 003 and fill areas 2 and 3 are located in small drainages on the south side of Cow
Canyon above the P3 portal. Sedimentation pond 005 and fill area 5 are located in a small drainage
on the south side of Cow Canyon below the P3 portal. Sedimentation ponds 008 and 009 and fill
area 8 are located in small drainages that empty directly into the Purgatoire Riverjust downstream
from Co~v Canyon. Sedimentation ponds OOl and 007 are situated in the central portion of Jeff
Canyon. These sedimentation ponds and fill aeeas were inventoried as irregular blocks around the
drainages and lie wholly or partially below the 7000 foot contour line which served as the boundary
for the surface mine survey area.
Single pole power lines are proposed to extend from existing power lines on the north side
• of the Picketwire Valley to the P3 portal and load out facilities. Only those portions of the proposed
power lines lying within the mine permit boundary were investigated. A water line is proposed to
run from the Purgatoire River to the P3 portal generally parallel to the proposed power line. The
exact placement of the water line was unknown at the time of inventory but it is planned to run
parallel to the Cow Canyon creek channel or along an existing two-track road which runs parallel
to the creek channel. A 200 foot wide corridor was inventoried for the portion of the P3 portal
power line that lies within Cow Canyon. This survey corridor was expanded to the southeast 100
feet beyond the existing Cow Creek channel or the existing two-track road, whichever was further.
to cover the paralleling water line. All intensive survey was discontinued at the fence line across the
mouth of Cow Canyon. No pedestrian inventory was conducted along either of the proposed power
lines or the proposed water line where they cross the Picketwire Valley due to a complete lack of
ground visibility. A reconnaissance level survey was conducted on the south side of State Highway
12 across from Coa~ Canyon to determine if any historic structural remains were present.
Test excavations in the form of shovel probes and test pits were conducted at six previously
recorded sites (SLA6968, SLA7182, SLA7186, SLA7196, SLA7199, and SLA7202), four newly
recorded sites along the realigned P3 haul road (SLA7368, SLA7370, SLA7372, and SLA7727) and
one isolated find (SLA7607). In addition, one newly recorded site associated with the proposed rail
spur (SLA7482) was tested with forty-four auger probes along the centerline to determine if
subsurface cultural remains were present.
MAC also conducted test excavations, mitigative data recovery excavations, and other
. reseazch at the Jeff Place, SLA7186, during 1997. A final report of the test excavations, along with
a treatment plan for the data recovery work, was submitted (McKibbin and Camllo 1997). A final
