!9
• recommended for cultura] resource clearance prior to the creation of the landscape (McKibbin
1997a), further field work is recommended only if it can be accomplished without delaying the
construction of the road (McKibbin 1997a:7).
SLA7370 (MM-4772): This prehistoric site was recorded during inventory of the P3 haul
road realignment in 1997. This lithic scatter lies on a slightly south-sloping bench on the northen _
edge of Jeff Canyon. Asouth-trending shallow drainage forms the western boundary of the site.
Artifacts include 14 felsite flakes, the majority of which are tertiary, and a complete felsite biface.
Nearly all of these artifacts are exposed in an erosional cut deflated area on the southeast side of the
site. Deposits are largely residual with some slopewash. They consist of a brown sandy clay loam
which does not exceed 10 cm in depth, based on seven shovel probes. Vegetation is oakbrush and
pinyon, with some grasses.
Seven shovel probes were excavated on the site to ascertain the depth of the deposits present
and determine if subsurface cultural deposits were present. Probes reached depths between 26 and
40 curbs. The testing showed that no more than 10 cm of Holocene deposition is present mantling
a gravelly clay. No cultural materials were recovered from any of the shovel probes.
The site shows no more than a thin mantle of Holocene deposition, sparse artifacts which
lack diversity, and no potential to address any pertinent research questions. [t has no datable
materials which would allow it to be placed within a historical context and is confined to surface
• contexts which has been impacted by natural forces that have compromised its physical integrity.
Although this site lies within the LCRHL, this site contains no ground stone and does not reflect
activities related to the procurement and initial processing of pinon nut and acorns. This site is
recommended as non-contributing to the significance of the district. No further work is necessary.
SLA7371 (MM-47731: This prehistoric site was recorded in 1997 during inventory of the
realigned P3 haul road. [t consists of a small scatter of eight manos and mano fragments and one
light gray felsite tertiary flake. The site is located on the crest and east-facing slope of a narrow
north-south trending finger ridge on the northern edge of Jeff Canyon. Soil is a light brown to dark
gray very sandy loam with numerous small to large sandstone gravels and angular fragments. On-
site vegetation consists of oak brush scrub with short and tall prairie grasses, short forbs, prickly
pear, and very sparse pinyon trees. An ephemeral drainage lies along the eastern site boundary. It
is likely that the artifacts on the steep slope are in primary context because oak brush covers the
slope. No Holocene deposition is present on the slope or the ridgetop, and there is no possibility for
buried deposits.
Although there is little or no potential for additional subsurface cultural materials, the site
lies within the LCRHL and is recommended to be contributing to the significance of the district.
Aside from one tertiary flake, this site consists of manos and may reflect activities related to the
procurement and initial processing ofpinon nut and acorns. However, because SLA7371 falls within
the P3 haul road corridor and had been recommended for cultural resource clearance prior to the
. creation of the landscape (McKibbin 1997a), further field work is recommended only if it can be
accomplished without delaying the construction of the road (McKibbin 1997a:7).
