16
• is 20-25 cm deep and is a red brown clayey loam with few gravels. Below this level clay grading
to bedrock.
Testing reveals that the cultural materials lie on or very close to the surface. However, the
site falls within the LCRHL and is recommended to be contributing to the significance of the district.
This site has ground stone and may reflect activities related to the procurement and initial processing
of pinon nut and acoms. The great number of flakes, diversity of artifacts, and the possible hearth
feature indicate that this may be a residential or base camp. However, because SLA7196 falls within
the P3 haul road corridor and had been recommended for cultural resource clearance prior to the
creation of the landscape (McKibbin 1997a), further field work is recommended only if it can be
accomplished without delaying the construction of the road (McKibbin 1997a:7).
SLA7199: This prehistoric site was recorded during inventory of the P3 haul road in 1996
(McKibbin et al. 1997). The site was not evaluated with respect to National Register eligibility, but
the presence of some colluvial deposits on the site suggested there was some potential for additional
significant subsurface remains and testing was recommended.
In 1997, 15 shovel probes were excavated into the areas of the site with the best potential for
buried deposits. Probes reached depths between 20 and 44 curbs. Soils were varying colors of clay
and were terminated at bedrock. No cultural materials were recovered that would suggest the
presence of subsurface cultural deposits. However, the site falls within the LCRHL and is
• recommended to be contributing to the significance ofthe district. This site has 56 pieces ofground
stone including 20 manos and may reflect activities related to the procurement and initial processing
of pinon nut and acoms. However, because SLA7199 falls within the P3 haul road corridor and had
been recommended for cultural resource cleaaance prior to the creation of the landscape (McKibbin
1997a), further field work is recommended only if it can be accomplished without delaying the
construction of the road (McKibbin 1997a:7).
SLA7202: This prehistoric site was recorded in 1996 during inventory of the P3 haul road
(McKibbin et al. 1997). The site was not evaluated with respect to National Register eligibility, but
testing was recommended because of the potential for subsurface remains associated with the
slopewash deposits at the western end of the site.
During the 1997 field season, 27 shovel probes were excavated in areas of the site with
potential for buried cultural remains. Probes reached depths between eight and 65 curbs. Soils are
a clayey or sandy loam above a structured clay which lies above bedrock. This upper strata varies
from about two cm in depth to about 40 cm. Only one piece ofdebitage was recovered. However,
the site falls within the LCRHL and is recommended to be contributing to the significance of the
district. This site has ground stone and may reflect activities related to the procurement and initial
processing of pinon nut and acoms. However, because SLA7202 falls within the P3 haul road
corridor and had been recommended for cultural resource clearance prior to the creation of the
landscape (McKibbin 1997a), further field work is recommended only if it can be accomplished
• without delaying the construction of the road (McKibbin 1997a:7)
