CHAPTER2 RESULTS
Introduction
The 1997 field work at the Lorencito Canyon Mine resulted in the discovery of 15 new sites
and 14 new isolated finds. Work was also conducted at nine previously recorded sites. Table t
provides a summary of sites and investigations for 1997.
Isolated Finds
A summary of 14 isolated finds recorded during the 1997 investigations can be found in
Table 2. -
Previously Recorded Sites
• SLA 1966: SLA 1966 is Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel or Medina Plaza Church, an historic adobe
church located along Colorado Highway l2just west ofMedina Plaza. This church is located about
400 feet east of the northern end of the proposed P3 power line. The church was recorded originally
in 1974 by Robert Adams and was recorded again in 1988 by the Colorado Department of
Transportation. The 1974 site form recommends that the site has "national" significance in
association with "cultural heritage". The 1988 site form recommends the site is not eligible for the
National Register, but might be considered contributing to a National Register district. MAC
concurs with the 1988 assessment.
MAC conducted no new investigations of this church and has no new information to provide
concerning the church. During reconnaissance ofthe northern part ofthis power line corridor, MAC
did observe that the original proposed route of the P3 portal power line passes within about 400 feet
of the church. MAC recommends the power line be moved farther to the west, as shown on the maps
in Appendices A, B and C, to place it a greater distance from the church. This will eliminate
possible impacts to the church and its immediate surroundings resulting from the proposed power
line. If the re-alignment of the power line is implemented, the site will not be impacted, and no
further work is recommended.
SLA6960: SLA6960 was recorded during 1996 investigations at the Lorencito Canyon Mine
(McKibbin et al. [ 997). [t was encountered in 1997 during survey for the realigned P3 haul road and
the mapped location of the site was found to be in error. The site was also expanded somewhat to
. include newly discovered cultural materials, including four manos and a metate fragment. The site
location has been corrected (reflected on maps in Appendices B and C). An OAHP re-evaluation
form has been completed and a new site map drawn reflecting changes to the site.
