The main fans are monitored and controlled by automated systems which will
provide timely warning in the event of fan malfunctions. In addition to
the automated control, monitoring, and warning systems, EFCI also has a
regular program of inspection and preventative maintenance for all fans to
assure continued safe and efficient operation of the mine ventilation
system. In the unlikely event of a mine explosion, the fan housings which
consist of concrete slab foundations, structural steel frameworks, and
sheet metal covers are fitted with louvered blowout panels, designed to
maintain the integrity and prevent damage to the ventilation system. Upon
completion of mining operations, the fans and associated mechanical
equipment will be salvaged, the fan housings and foundations will be
demolished, and resulting debris will be disposed of in designated
disposal areas.
Shop/Office/Warehouse Facilities. Shop/Office/Warehouse facilities for
the Southfield Mine were constructed on the portal bench around the mine
portals. These facilities were constructed with concrete slab and block
foundations, a structural steel framework and corrugated metal exterior
• walls. The shop includes repair facilities for both surface and
underground production and support equipment. Shop facilities include
repair bays, a mobile overhead crane to handle heavy machine parts and
necessary equipment and supplies for machine lubrication, maintenance and
repair. It should be noted that EFCI also has limited underground shop
facilities located in each active section where equipment may be taken for
minor repair and lubrication to minimize production downtime underground.
The mine office facilities, located above the mine portals, include
offices for the Mine Manager, production and maintenance supervisory
personnel, engineering staff, payroll and purchasing, safety personnel, a
lunch room, safety training area, and changing area for mine personnel.
In conjunction with the shop facilities, EFCI also maintains warehouse
facilities for storage of spare parts and operating supplies. Dependent
upon the nature and frequency of use and their size, spare parts and
supplies may either be stored in the actual warehouse area, or in an open
storage area on the surface which is shown on the Mine Surface Facilities
rni2 -l7
2.05.3-22 R Revised - January, 1992
