III IIIIIIIIIIIII III Doc ,`b.12/11I2001
sss 7T'
.~ !/
~` 4_0 OPERATION AND RECLAMATION STATUS
The text contained in this section is mostly obsolete since the mine has been reclaimed.
It is difficult to revise approximately 144 pages of text without losing some valuable
historical information. The purpose of the following discussion is to describe the status of
the mine site and loadout as of the date at the bottom of the page. This will assist the
reader of this permit to understand the portions of this section that are no longer applicable
to the operation.
Mine Status
All of the structures at the North Thompson Creek No. 1 Mine and No. 3 Mine were
removed from the site during 1986 and 1987. The foundations and some of the structures
were buried on site. During 1987 the No. 1 and No. 3 Mine sites were contoured and
reclaimed. The base of the concrete box culvert in North Thompson Creek through the No.
1 Mine area was left in place to assure creek channel erosion did not occur. Originally, the
concrete base and stream banks were covered with riprap. However, high flows moved
• the riprap off of the concrete base. The concrete base will be permanent to provide creek
channel protection which wilt in turn assure the No. 1 Mine portal area is not eroded which
will protect the permanent water treatment facility.
During 1988, the No 1. Mine filled with water and started to discharge. The portal area was
excavated in order to control this seepage. One of the portals and a flooded air shaft were
exposed to control the mine seepage.
As of June 1998, all of the seepage water from the No. 1 Mine is emerging from the shaft.
The water from the shaft is conveyed to the long pond through a 6-inch plastic pipe.
During late 1998, the Operator backfilled the portal area. A 36-inch culvert was placed in
the fill to provide access to the air shaft. In the event maintenance on the 6-inch pvc pipe
is required, access to the air shaft will be through the culvert.
The No. 3 Mine, (Outfall 007), has two separate sources of discharge. One is from a point
source (spring) within the Mine that is piped directly to the surface. This good quality point
source of water was the source of the discharge from the No. 3 Mine, (Outfall 007), since
• the mine was sealed in 1986. The water level in the mine fluctuated since that time but no
4-i (Rev. 5/01)
