LAND USE <br />There is one abandoned coal mine within the Coal Gulch Basin Area. That coal <br />mine was formerly known as the Farmer's Mine. The Farmer's Mine and the sur- <br />rounding surface area is currently owned by Colorado Westmorelsnd Inc. The <br />area is dominated by rangeland. The rangeland is used for cattle grazing and <br />wildlife habitat. <br />There are small areas in the southern part of the basin on Garvin Mesa that <br />have been developed for cropland use. These areas are irrigated by flows from <br />both Coal Gulch and Terror Creek. The areas of cropland development are small <br />and the water commissioner for Division 4, District 40 Water Court has listed <br />60 acres as being irrigated on that Garvin Mesa area. <br />WATER RIGHTS <br />Eight water rights have been decreed in the Coal Gulch Basin. A review of <br />those water rights indicates that 3.745 cubic feet per second have been decreed <br />for irrigation and 0.372 cubic feet per second have been decreed for domestic, <br />industrial, stock water, and other uses. A review of Soil Conservation Service <br />1975 aerial photographs indicates approximately 62 acres of land are irrigated <br />by ditches in Coal Gulch Basin. The water commissioner records total 60 acres <br />under irrigation in Coal Gulch Basin during 1982. <br />A review of diversion records indicates that the Drake-Campbell Ditch has not <br />been used since 1969, and only two recorded flows into the Welborn Ditch have <br />occurred. Most of the irrigation on the Garvin Mesa area is supplemented with <br />water from Terror Creek. Because of the ephemeral nature of Coal Gulch and Che <br />small areal extent of the drainage basin, Coal Gulch would be considered an <br />unreliable source for irrigation waters. <br />I <br />
