TROUT CREEK FLOOD PLAZN
~ General
Sunland Mining Corp's Apex Mine No. 2 is located in Section 22,
Township 4 North, Range 85 West, of the 6th Principal Meridian, approx-
imately 5 miles west of Oak Creek, Colorado. The mine site is
located in a steep, narrow valley adjacent to Trout Creek. The
' area is characterized by sparse vegetation, primarily scrub oak,
on steep south-facing slopes and aspen and spruce on the gentler
north-facing slopes. The elevation of the mine site is approximately
7400 feet.
', Hydrology
The drainage basin of Trout Creek which lies above Apex Mine
arises from an elevation of 7400 feet at the mine to approximately
• 12,000 feet along the ridges at the south end. It includes an
area of about 32.95 square miles, and has a length of about 17.3
miles. The drainage basin is shown in Figure 1 Vicinity Map, page
2, which is taken from a map prepared by the Army Map Service titled
"Craig, Colorado" and numbered NR-13-10.
Based on a review of records of the D.S. Geological Survey,
and other governmental and private sources, there are no stream
~ gages in the study area with periods of record sufficient for a
' statistical analysis of runoff events. There are two gages listed
I
in "Magnitude and Frequency of Floods in Colorado, Part~:9" as
published by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1966. Gage No. 2430,
"Trout Creek near Phippsburg, Colorado" is located upstream of the
. Apex Mine near the headwaters of Trout Creek. it has a drainage
~ ` ~ area of about 16.0 square miles. The gage, however, only has a
i
1 ,
-1-~ (3t
