WESTERN SLOPE CARBON, INC.
• MINE OFFICE -SOMERSET, COLORADO 83<3C
303~9i9~5B15
September 4, 1979
Mr. Bill Knepl.
Ventilation Department
MSHA
Denver, CO
Dear Sir:
Western Slope Carbon respectfully requests permission to use the
first four cross cuts of [he main belt as an intake air course.
In accordance with 75326 and 75-1707 C.FR. we would construct
steel doors in the fourth crosscut that could be shut tightly
in the even[ of a fire, so that the air from the belt would be
coursed into the return. Belt fire sensors would be moved from
125' to 50' for added protection. The drive assembly is now
protected with a dry powder type system. Doors will be built
• with 1/4" steel plate and hung on treated wooden frames.(See
attachment.) Our reasons for wanting this approval are:
1. Need for more intake air capacity immediately
2. To lessen restriction on mine ventilation
We would appreciate approval of this until March 1, 1980.
At the present time we are waiting for an approval from OSM
for a breakout. When the breakout is completed we would then
isolate the belt as before.
Sincerely,
Ralph Audin
Safety Director
RA:wp '~ -~
: ~QD 0 X0,19 ~
5
~, :,
~'- ,
u
A f U~ F I D I A A Y O F N O g T N W[ F T [ M F A G Y C O M F A N Y
