OW-4L in the same time period. These changes may be related to
irrigation activities on the land surrounding the monitoring sites. •
Other reasons for these changes are not apparent. Section 3.3.4.6
will discuss the recharge/discharge of each area.
3.3.4.5 Water Quality
All water quality sampling on the NCEC property was performed
according to recognized and accepted sample collection techniques.
These techniques include removal of 2-3 casing volumes, where
practical, measurement of field parameters at the site, field
filtering of the sample, sample preservation, which includes both
acidification and maintaining low temperatures during transport,
and quick delivery to the lab, usually one day after sampling. All
equipment used in the sampling process was rinsed with the water to
be sampled prior to using and cleaned with distilled water between
sample locations. The samples were analyzed at Industrial Labs of
Denver, using EPA accepted procedures.
As a further precaution, unannounced replicate samples were sent to
the lab. The results of this test are provided in Appendix 3.3-,f~f 7
The results of all analyses to date, including cation-anion
balances and field parameters measured at each site, are provided
in Appendices 3.3-6 and 3.3-7. A statistical analysis of all
analytical results is provided for each monitoring site (Appendix
3.3-8). Appendix 3.3-9 contains plots of temperature, total
dissolved solids, and conductivity versus time for selected wells.
A trilinear diagram, using milliequivalents calculated from the
means of the various constituents from each site, is presented in
Figure 3.3-12. This figure will be discussed in more detail later
in this section.
The water quality of the permit area can be divided into three
distinct water types (Figure 3.3-12). They are: 1) Mancos Shale, •
NCEC - Coal Ridge #1 3-28 AHC/1145/900301
