The Rollins sandstone is between 80 and 120 feet thick and composed
of light gray, very fine to fine grained, moderately indurated,
usually massive, quartz sandstone. A minimum of fractures were
identified in core.
In the permit area, this unit is unsaturated above an elevation of
about 6060 feet. Yield at 2-SK-3H was about four gpm with a static
head of about 120 feet above the elevation of this site. An
aquifer test of 2-SK-3H indicates a transmissivity of 50 gpd/ft
(Appendix 3.3-5).
3.3.4.9 Alluvial/Colluvial Aquifers
Monitoring wells which were initially constructed on the south side
of the Grand Hogback were designed to monitor ground water in the
colluvium in the narrow valleys draining the south side of the
ridge and up and downgradient alluvial holes along Alkali Creek
(Figure 3.3-6). Well OW-1 has proven to be dry most of the time
and well OW-5 was dropped because of changes in the mine plan.
Wells OW-2, 3 and 4 have been monitored monthly for the field
parameters (Appendix 3.3-7) and quarterly for the CMLRD constituent
list (Appendix 3.3-6) during the baseline period.
A second set of monitoring wells were constructed on the north side
of the ridge to monitor the previously proposed disposal facility
and loadout sites (Figure 3.3-6). These wells have been monitored
since mid summer 1983, both monthly and quarterly, for field
parameters and the CMLRD constituent list, respectively. All of
these wells are completed in either alluvium or colluvium (Table
3.3-2) .
The alluvial holes OW-2 and -3 encountered dark brown slightly
sandy silt and clay, and silty, medium dense, sand with occasional
sandstone fragments. Both holes bottomed in well cemented light to
dark brown sandstone which has an occasional claystone lens. The
alluvium along Alkali Creek is about 20 to 25 feet thick and rests
NCBC - Coal Ridge #1 3-26 ABC/1145/900301
