Response to a memo of June 18,
1979 from the Division of lJater Resources.
Dear Jim:
The only use of water in this mining operation will be for dust control
within the immediate area of the extraction process. The haul road to
the extraction site will be asphalt to eliminate dust and reduce main-
tenance of vehicles. The pits will be wet pits, therefore, the only
watering for dust control will be on dry areas within the pit that
lead to the haul road. There may be a slight loss of water due to
evaporation as the water is sprayed, but most of the water will return
to the groundwater table. Also, water will only be used for dust
control during exceptionally hot dry days during the summer. There-
fore, it is very hard to estimate the volume of water, but the operator
feels that on these dry days maybe 2000 gallons of water will be
sprayed within the pit area. If the Division of Water Resources did
require a well permit for this minimal water use, the operator would
be better off purchasing water from the City of Loveland since the
permit would probably be denied until a change of use for his irriga-
tion water could be obtained through the water court. The gravel from
the operation would be used strictly as road material, therefore, no
washing is required. The settling pond shown on Exhibit C is for
dewatering purposes only.
There are approximately 17.2 acres of lake surface area planned at
this time. The mining and reclamation plans indicate 30.6 acres of
lake surface. Area 2 (19.4 acres) is planned as a landfill and if
approved and additional landfill area is needed by the City of Loveland
a technical revision will be submitted to the "4ined Land Reclamation
Board to use Area 4 (13.4 acres) as a landfill also. However, Area 2
has not yet been approved by the Radiation and Waste Division of the
Colorado Department of Health. As a result, it can only be estimated
that 17.2 to 50.0 acres of lake surface will be exposed to evapora-
tion. Therefore, to estimate on amount of evaporation, the amount of

~ Y
1 '
='`.
^z
~ a
a
~~~
0
r
a
S
