• The peak discharge from the inflow design flood was used to size the
emergency spillway weir length without regard to the attenuation of
inflow that the reservoir together with its primary spillway will
achieve. This provides for a very conservative emergency spillway
design and adds to the factor of safety for the ponds. Emergency
spillway freeboard to the top of the embankment was set at one (I) foot.
The emergency spillway designs are summarized in the Pond Schedule shown
on the Sedimentation Ponds - Kerr Coal Mine Map, (Plate I). This map
also contains an emergency spillway detail showing a typical
configuration. The emergency spillway rating curves are shown on the
Sedimentation Ponds - Hydrology and Hydraulics Map, (Plate II). Figures
23-4 through 23-10, Embankment and Emergency Spillway Configurations,
illustrate the emergency spillway location and configuration for each
pond.
• Baffles
Baffles have been designed for Ponds C, D, and F to prevent short
circuiting. The baffle locations within the ponds are shown on Figures
23-6, 23-7, and 23-g, Embankment and Emergency Spillway Configurations.

23-44
