.Di III IIIIIIIIIIIII III ce Only
STATE OF COLORADO
.. ~~
• - DIVISION OF WILDLIFE
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
(o ~ p[v,ced vn caps ~ °~ ~ ~n -rQv,r ol.,~ ~ D- ~~ ~ R
DATE: October 4, 1977
T0: Rex Taliaferro
FROM: Don Bogart

I have gone over the Martin-Marietta statement of their impacts on
various aspects of the environment and have visited the area on the
ground.
Even though they make no claim to be professionals on the wildlife
statement, I feel that they have actually handled this phase of the
report much better than many so called professionals in other reports
of like nature.
Even though there has been a large number of both game and non-game
species sighted in the area, the area actually does not contribute
too much to the overall picture in the wildlife field as many of the
species are only passing through on migration. Of course, there are
a few deer and raccoon using the stream as a feeding area but the area
has been disturbed for a number of years and, consequently, the total
number of any species using the area is very limited.
After the mining is completed and the reclamation plan put into effect,
the area should be a much better wildlife area than now. Even though
the big game species will probably not differ too much from what it
is now, the habitat for waterfowl will be vastly improved, as well as
for many non-game species. This will be due to the use of ponds in
their reclamation work. This will also bring about an increase in the
number of nuisance species with better habitat and more prey species
available.
There are no known threatened or endangered species in the area. Even
though there are some prairie dogs on the area, I know of no one who
has seen a black footed ferret.
I would concur with their project statement.
DB:cc
~~CEIVED
~~~ ~ 1977
Colo.
