• INTRODUCTION
The Bear Number 1 and 2 mine sites (Permit Application C-81-033) were
sampled between September 3 and September 8, 1993 in anticipation of qualifying for
Final bond release. The mine sites were reclaimed in 1982 and were sampled in 1991
and 1992 (see Bear No. 1 and 2 Mine Sites. Permit Number C-81-033. Ve eg tation
Monitoring Report October 1991 and Bear No. l and 2 Mine Sites. Permit Number
C-8]-033. 1992 Vegetation Report. Final Bond Release Request. September- 1992).
Herbaceous cover and herbaceous production were estimated for the contiguous sites.
No woody plant density success standard applies. The reclaimed surfaces are located
within Section 9, T 13 S, R 90 W, 6th P.M. near Somerset in Gunnison County,
Colorado. The mine sites are located between 5900 and 6100 feet in elevation and are
situated on flat areas or north-facing slopes overlooking the North Fork of the
• Gunnison River. All sampling was carried out by Matthew S. Hayes of Hayes
Environmental Services, Inc.
Site vegetation satisfied the applicable success standards in both 1991 and 1992.
Because of complications regarding another aspect of reclamation success, the operator
was not able to apply for final bond release within the time that the 1992 study would
have applied. Therefore, an additional year of sampling was required to establish, in
accordance with Rule 4.15.7(5), that the vegetation met all success standards in the last
two years of the liability period. Reclamation standards for herbaceous cover,
herbaceous production, and species diversity have been established as the criteria that
will be used to determine success. These are listed on pages 50 and 51 of the 1987
Findings Document and are discussed below.
1
