• INTRODUCTION
The Bear Number 1 and 2 Mine sites (Penni[ Application C-81-033) were
visited twice (August I 1 -August 14, and August 19 of 1992) and sampled in
anticipation of yualifying for final bond release. The mine sites were reclaimed in
]982 and were sampled last year (see Bear No. 1 and 2 Mine Sites Permit Number C-
81-033. Vegetation MonitoringReport. October 1991). Herbaceous cover and
herbaceous production were estimated for the contiguous sites. No woody plant density
success standard applies. The reclaimed surfaces are located within Section 9, T 13 S,
R 90 W, 6th P.M. near Somerset in Gunnison County, Colorado. The mine sites are
located between 5900 and 6100 feet in elevation and are situated on flat areas or north-
facing slopes overlooking the North Fork of the Gunnison River. All sampling was
• carried out by Matthew S. Hayes of Hayes Environmental Services.
Data was collected to determine if, in the tenth year of the ten year reclamation
bond period, the reclaimed community presently satisfies reclamation success
requirements. Reclamation standards ti>r herbaceous cover, herbaceous production,
and species diversity have been established as the criteria that will be used to determine
success. These are listed on pages 50 and S1 of the 1987 Findings Document and are
outlined below.
r
