There is no undisturbed
soil in the bottom at all and only occasional "pioneer plants."
The "soil" in the bottom is, obviously, very stony, loamy and sandy material.
Soils or the adjacent slopes are shallow and mostly sandy loam to loamy sand
with stcnes. The material in the bottom could support vegetation if some
of the stones were removed. If revegetation is necessary, I'd recommend
separating the finer soil materials and stockpiling them for use later as a
substitute for topsoil. (This material should be amended with organic matter
and fertilizer to improve revegetation success.)
On the following page, I've listed the plants we observed growing in the
valley bottom and on the adjacent lower slopes. I've also included a
recommended seed mix which can be used for reclamation should that be necessary.
Please, call if I can be of further help.
Sincerely,
Gary Finstad
District Conservationist
encl.
0 Tne Son Conser canon Serve SCS-AS-1
U is an agency of the 1049
Deoarlmenl of Agncult ure
