/~/-aW 3 -O/lo
Obi2c.>Liu-,
~~
May 19, 2003
~brn
RECEIVED
MAY 12 0 2003
To: Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80202
From: Will and Linda Piper
11230 County Road 20
Fort Lupton, CO 80621
Division ~f
Re: Heit Sand and Gravel Mine Permit -Located Weld County Road 25 and 20
To Whom It May Concern:
We are writing to continent on the application submitted by the Heit Sand and Gravel Iv
mine will be located just over .5 of a mile from our home of 26 years and next to the Vi
and the Lupton Meadows Subdivision. We believe this proposed mine, especially with
for cement and asphalt; is completely incompatible with our mixed agricultural and resi
communities.
and Deblesy
This proposed
of Vollmer
essing plants
The application states on page one (1) that land uses surrounding the property in question are agricultural
in nature. That description would have applied ten (10) years ago, but not today. It is true that there is still
some agricultural t~se in the area; however, since then many residential homes have been built along Weld
County Road 25 and in Vollmer.. This mine will be located close to and between two residential
communities -Vollmer and Lupton Meadows Subdivision. Many of these acreages are for residential and
recreational use with agriculture not supplying a main source of income. i
Reference is made in the application to the fact that no known threatened wildlife species are listed in the
Colorado Natural Heritage Date Base specifically for the property in question. We would like to point out
that from living here for 20 plus years we have regularly spotted and enjoyed seeing both Golden and Bald
Eagles, Red Tailcd Hawks, Wild Turkeys, Great Homed Owls, Pox and many varieties of song birds and
smaller species of animals. Their existence will not be enhanced by loss of habitat and interruptions from
noise, dust, night lighting and traffic. It is disturbing to think that unless a species is particularly
threatened that this river and flood plain habitat would be destroyed with no consideration for the wild life
we enjoy in our neighborhood.
I
Nearly 200 persons residing in the area will be impacted by one or a combination of increased traffic,
noise, smell from the asphalt plant and by visual detriments to our landscape from the pit and associated
productions. (This is not an estimated number, but based on an actual count of inhabitants on arteries
along and homes within view of the proposed pit.) Impact on water wells for some are of great concern,
especially for those who have shallow wells and live closest to the proposed mine.
