• determine the sample point location. The field operator paced
north (a predetermined direction) a distance indicated by the first
random number and rotated 90 degrees to the right and paced the
distance indicated by the second random number. The southwest
corner of the exclosure was set at the tip of the operator's boot.
i The same basic approach was used in reference areas. The
southwest corner of the reference area was established. This corner
was the origin of the X and Y axes. The operator paced north along
the Y axes a random distance and then rotated 90 degrees and paced
east parallel to the X axes a random distance. The southwest
corner of the exclosure was then established at the tip of the
operator's boot.
Production. Exclosures for the 1979 growing season and 1980
growing season were erected in April. Exclosures were made in the
shape of a pyramid, standing approximately 5 feet high and having
• a square base approximately 5 feet on each side. Production data
was extracted from a one-half meter rectangular quadrant placed
in the center of the exclosure. Production data was obtained in
September 1979 and 1980.
At the end of the 1979, 1980 growing season (mid July through
September) the above ground biomass was clipped. Annual production
data obtained by KRC in 1979 included clipping grasses, grasslike
plants, forbs, half-shrubs, shrubs and annual forbs. Wyoming Fuel
Company's 1980 annual production involved clipping and separating
grasses, grasslike plants and forbs (no distinction was made between
annual and perennial forbs). Wyoming Fuel Company's 1980 program
conforms to current Colorado Regulations in obtaining herbaceous
vegetation production only.
Vegetation samples were weighed in the field to determine
sample adequacy. Samples were taken to Colorado State University
where they were dried and weighed. All samples were dried at 105°C
-3-
