Collins, CO 80526
March 13, 1981) ~-etrcrz UK ~s ~°c-RP~fioNe «~~ 4~PtiM`~v~y
Mr. Neil Sprague
Route 2, Sox 99A
Berthoud, CO 80513
RE: Loveland Troup Quarry
Dear Mr. Sprague:
As a result of our visit to this site on March 10, 1981, we have
Che following recommendations. The soil in this area is map ed as a
Ba11er-Rock Outcrop Complex. This soil is a shallow, well d ained soil
with a surface layer of stony sandy loam up to 11 inches dee Approxi-
mately 30% of this area is rock outcrop. Any loose surface oil has
between 35% and 70% stones and cobbles. See page 14 of the arimer Co.
Area Soil Survey for additional information. i
On areas not disturbed by quarry activities, some nativ vegetation
exist. Native tall and short grasses have almost been entir ly replaced
by cheatgrass (an invader). An excellent browse species, Mo tain Maho-
gany, survives along with Ponderosa Pine and numerous invadi g annuals.
This area's Range Site designation is that of Shallow Foothi ls. This
area should support little and big bluestem, needlegrass, si a-oats
grama, Griffith's wheatgrass and blue grama. These grasses re almost
non-existent because of heavy grazing.
The reclamation effort should include grading and shapi g the dis-
turbed areas to resemble the natural terrain. Slopes to be eeded
should not exceed 3:1. Graded areas should be covered with mall and
fine soil material. Steep areas and areas with exposed bedr ck should be
terraced. Dams across existing drainages should not be crea ed. A
recommended seeding mix would be:
% of Mix lbs. PL /Ac.~
big bluestem (Kaw) 20 4.5
little bluestem (Pastura) 15 2.2
side-oats grama (Vaughn) 15 2.2
western wheatgrass (Barton) 25 8
intermediate wheatgrass (Amur) 25 7.5
Total 24.5
*NOTE: PLS is Pure Live Seed
The seed will have to be broadcast over the area and it shou d be raked
or dragged after broadcasting to cover the seed (see attache revegeta-
tion guideline). Fertilizer should be applied in accordance ith recom-
O mendations based on a soil test. Seed should be applied on a basis
V -~
