Lorencito Canyon dline Cartmur Cuts Culnvnl Resources
not be significant by the Native American groups, then these sites will be considered not eligible
• and clearance will be given. There are four sites that require testing to provide additional
information regarding their eligibility for the NRHP; SI.A9~62. ~LA9~70, ~LA9577, and
SLA9578. These sites must also be avoided. For the sites that must be avoided. it is
recommended that protective fencing be erected to prevent inadvertent damage and to ensure that
all construction activity stays outside of the site's boundaries.
SUMMARY
A total of 235 acres were surveyed for cultural resources. This resulted in 12 newly recorded
isolated finds, 13 newly recorded sites, and one reevaluated site. Four of the newly recorded sites
contain features identified as eagle traps/vision quest sites. Four sites require testing to aid in
evaluating the eligibility of the resource. Five sites are considered not eligible for the National
Register of Historic Places.
Clearance is recommended in most of [he project areas. Clearance includes areas that contain
previously recorded and newly recorded sites and isolates that are considered not eligible for the
NRHP. Specifically, those sites are: previously recorded sites; SLA7190, SLA7192, SLA7193,
SLA791~, SLA7197, reevaluated site; SLA7196, newly recorded sites; SLA9567, SLA9573,
SLA9579, SLA9603, fossil locality; ~LA9564, and newly recorded isolated finds; SLA9560,
SLA9563, SLA9565, SLA9568, SLA9569, SLA9574, 5LA9575, SLA9576, SLA9566, SLA9600,
SLA9601, SLA9602.
~:• Avoidance and protection are recommended for sites that require further work to determine their
eligibility and that are contributing resources for the proposed National Register District, Rural
Historic Landscape. The nomination of this area as a district is described in McKibbin et al
(2001) with a main theme relating to the intense procurement and processing of plant resources,
specifically pinon nuts, acorns, or both. There are three newly recorded sites that are considered
contributing elements for the National Register District. These sites also require testing to aid in
the determination of their individual eligibility for the NRHP. These sites are SLA9562,
SLA9570, SLA9578. One site requires testing to aid in eligibility determination but is considered
not to be a contributing resource for the district, SLA9577. There are four sites with features
identified as eagle traps/vision quest sites, 5LA9561, SLA9566, SLA9571, SLA9572, and
eligibility of these sites is pending completion of Native American consultation. All of these sites
must be avoided and protected. Protective fencing should be erected to prevent inadvertent
damage and to ensure that all construction activity stays outside of the boundaries for these eight
sites.
