LJrenCtlo
,LLne Ctntmur Cuts CnOural Resources /nvzntop-
,..ro
r
• RESULTS ~ ~~~t~cs
Approximately 235 acres were examined for cultu~l r~rces. Previously recorded sites in the
project area were also relocated to assess if anv mpacts or changes have occurred since the/r
original recording. A reevaluation form fore previously recorded site, ~LA7196, was
completed due to impacts from mine activitie .There are 13 ne~v sites and 12 isolated finds
recorded as a result of this cultural resource inventory. All of the isolated finds are prehistoric
artifacts. The 13 sites include one fossil locality, three eagle trap/vision quest locations, eight
prehistoric sites that are open lithic scatters (many with ground stone), and one multi-component
site. The multi-component site has a historic rock cairn with a crude cross, a prehistoric open
lithic scatter, eagle trap/vision quest structures, and fossil locality. Each of these sites is briefly
described below.
REEVALUATED SITE
5LA7196
This site was recorded in November 1996 by Metcalf Archaeological Consultants. It is within the
current project area and was heavily disturbed by a recently built road. The site was originally
described as being a large open camp with 1000+ flakes, manos, ground stone, metates, bifaces,
cores, and a feature. It was determined as "Needs Data" by the OAHP on 3/21/97. The current
survey noted that the datum, a PVC pipe with a metal tag, could not be located and that there has
• been heavy disturbance of the site. There is now an improved dirt road that cuts through the
center of the site with disturbance from road building varying between 12 and 20 meters in width
and running the length of the road in the site area, approximately 120 meters. The only cultural
remains observed are in the eastern portion of the originally recorded site area. No evidence of
the feature was seen. A scatter of flakes is all that could be seen to re-established this site. A new
site map has been drawn indicating new site boundaries and the area of impact from the mine
road. There has been extensive damage to the site. However, the eastern portion is the area that
was determined to contain buried deposits and there are still cultural remains on the surface in
that area. There was no indication of the feature or datum that were in the eastern portion of the
site, hence there could have been other disturbance in the area. The integrity of the site is
questionable and may not contribute further to our knowledge of the prehistory of the area.
Given the criteria as a contributing element of the proposed LCRHL, McKibbin et al (2001), the
loss of integrity also compromises the sites inclusion in the proposed district. Therefore, it is
recommended that the eligibility of this site be changed from needing additional testing to "Not
Eligible" for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and be considered as not
a contributing element to the LCRHL.
NEWLY RECORDED SITES
5LA9561.
This is amulti-component site located on anorth-facing bench overlooking the Purga[oire River.
• The site offers a spectacular view of the valley below with visibility east and west down the river
course for several miles. The site, measuring 61 x 61 meters, includes a prehistoric component
C'nruuurCunCnlRn-RPT(J]SIRev!/APrII ?:, aRl 7
