The earlier
• portions of this chronological scheme, the Paleoindian Stage, and the Early Archaic Period of the
Archaic Stage, are very weakly represented in the Park Plateau. Beginning with the Middle
Archaic period, more sites have been identified and a wider range of material remains has been
recovered.
Table 2
Prehistoric Cultural Scheme for the Arkansas River Basin
ladaated from Zier and Kalasz 1999)
•
Cultural Taxon Roughly Equivalent Taxa Temporal Range
Paleoindian Stage >7800 B.P.
Pre-Clovis Period >11,500 B.P.
Clovis Period Llano 11,500-10,950 B.P.
Folsom Period Llano 10,950-10,250 B.P.
Plano Period 10,250-7800 B.P.

Archaic Stage 7800-1850 B.P.
Early Archaic Period 7800-5000 B.P.
Middle Archaic Period McKean Complex 5000-3000 B.P.
Late Archaic Period 3000-1850 B.P.

Late Prehistoric Stage Ceramic Stage 1850-225 B.P.
Developmental Period Early Ceramic; Plains Woodland 1850-900 B.P.
Diversification Period Middle Ceramic; 900-500 B.P.
Apishapa Phase 900-500 B.P.
Sopris Phase 900-750 B.P.
Protohistoric Period Late Ceramic 500-225 B.P.
STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES
In accordance with the regulatory requirements of a Memorandum of Understanding between the
Mined Land Reclamation Board and the Colorado Office of Archaeology and Historic
Preservation, this project area was inventoried to identify any cultural resources within the APE
of the proposed project. Any discovered cultural resources were to be evaluated for eligibility to
the National Register of Historic Places (Register) under the Criteria for Eligibility (36 CFR
§60.4 a-d). Register eligibility is evaluated in terms of the integrity of the resource, and: (a) its
association with significant events, or patterns in history or prehistory; (b) its association with
the specific contributions of individuals significant in our past; (c) its engineering, artistic, or
architectural values; or (d) its information potential for important research questions in history or
prehistory.
Prehistoric resources are most often evaluated under Criterion d, for their potential to yield
information important in prehistory. Significant information potential in a prehistoric site
requires that the site contain intact cultural deposits or discrete activity areas that can be securely
• associated with a temporal period or discrete cultural group. The potential for intact deposits or
cultural/temporal associations may be inferred from surface evidence of cultural features or
CunrnurCubCulRes-RY77JCiJRev!/April 1:. 1001 5
