SECTION G - SOILS AND VEGETATION
Soils
The predominant soil series, as mapped and surveyed by
the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service,
Greeley, Colorado office, consists of Wet Loamy soils,
further defined as Loamy Alluvial-moderately wet, Wet Alluvial,
Loamy Alluvial - gravely substrature, and Sandy Alluvial.
These soils formed in recent alluvium.
This type of soil is moderately shallow, poorly drained
soil with a medium textured surface and subsoil. Depth to
sand and/or gravel is 10 to forty inches. The soil is
mottled from 10 inches downward and may or may not have a
water table within 60 inches. The soil is usually moderately
saline. Specifically, this soil is not very well suited
for usual crop production-cultivation with its use being
mainly restricted to pasture, woodland or wildlife, because
of wetness, flood hazard and poor drainage. It must be
further noted that the above soil is a good potential source
of gravel. P.H. factor far the above soils is 7.4-8.4.
Conductivity 2-16 Mm-hos/cm.
Vegetation
The present native vegetation cover is scattered with
some cottonwoods as dominant tree species.
In the Appendix of this report is a list of vegetation
as presently exists. Also see physical features map in the
Appendix.
ReveQetation
The following revegetation program will be initiated,
as recommended and suggested by local Soil Conservation
District, Greeley office.
The shoreline areas (banks) will be properly sloped
(minimum 3:1) and revegetated immediately to prevent water
and wind erosion. Seeding of all areas will consist of
alkali sacton, western wheatgrass and switchgrass, at 7.1 pounds
per acre rate. A firm seedbed will be established and a
grass drill will be used. Any future livestock grazing
program will be controlled by fencing (barbed wire or
electric) to prevent any undue overgrazing of newly seeded
areas. A copy of the seeding recommendation is incorporated
as part of this report and appears in the Appendix of this
report.
-8-
