The proposed project is
within the c~urent pe>mitted coal mining area (Permit Number G80-007) avid on land
surface managed by the USFS. The wrolls will be located on Federal Coal (BT.M) I.eage
COC-056447. the well numbers are 24HG7-E37XC A and B. The wells will be drilled in
the area approved under TR 96 and subsequent approvals for the annual operating plans
i,e. MR 306 (2005), for Methane Drainage Wells. i
MCC's overall plan for drilling and reclaiming MDWs was originally approved by
CDMG ott 1 S July 2002 as Technical Revision % -Project Phm for Methane I)rairrage
Wells for Panels 16, 17, 17S, 18-24. The Forest Service performed an Environmerrml
Assessment of MCC's Methane Drainage Wells Plan, and approval was received in the
Decision Notice and Finding of No Significarn hrpact, May 3],2002. These two proposed
wells ale m the overall project area but were nut proposed for inchrsion in the U5 Forest
Service reviews. As such, the.4e wells are the subject of this separate Mnaor Revision.
Becm~se these wells one on US Forest Service managed lands, US Forest Service approval
of their installation will be required.
The attached Proposes MDWs and New Road Construction for 2005, Map 2, at a scale of
1° = 1000', depicts the general location of the proposed drill pad, amid proposed methane
drainage wells (part ofthe 2005 MDW Project).
SURFACE TOPOGRAPHX
The elevations of the proposed borehole locations range front approromately 8300 ft to
8400 ft. The tentain is comprised of steep slopes and mesa tops formed within the
Wasatch, and Mesa Verde Formations sad the colluvium and alluvium layers of the slope
debris. ,The principle drainages in this area are unnamed tributaries to Deep Creek that is
tributary to Raven Creek that is tn'brrtary to the North Fodc of the Gunnison River.
GEOLOGX
The proposed Project would include drilling along the southeastern edge of the Picear~ce
Basin within the Somerset Coal Field, occurring on the Somerset U.S.G.S. 7 1/2-minute
quadrangle map.
Initial geological wo~dr, m this area was, completed by W. T. Lee (1912), who reported
his findings in, "Coal Fields of Grand Mesa and the West Elk Mountains, Colorado"
(USGS Bulletin 510). Later in 1948, Ward H. Johnson published a USGS map of the
Paomia Coal Field incorporating drill hole data generated tbroug~r a USG5 and U.S.
