To: Colorado Division'of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street
Room 215
Denver. CO 80302
From: Deborah K. Landers
PO Box 881084, Steamboat Springs, CO 80488
970/870-3069
Re: Camilletti Pit #2 Objection, File No. M-2001-023
June 14,2001
This is my statement to show how I would be affected by the Mine Land Reclamation Board's
decision to approve a gravel mine permit for Camilletti & Sons at the confluence of Trout Creek
and the Yampa River.
I object to the fact that Routt County residents near the site and downstream have already been
aggrieved by Routt County Commissioner approval of the gravel mine based on wrong floodplain
and incorrect dewatering information. If this application is approved, based on previous erroneous
studies and reports then my neighbors and I will suffer at the hands of the State as well. All
involved will experience pain and suffering caused by knowing that persons in power can make
decisions based on reports filled with misstatements and errors. In the interest of fairness for all
and to avoid having more aggrieved residents, please demand the truth from the applicant and
consider the comments of experts in the fields of wetlands science and water resource engineering
that will be presented.
I object to the gravel mine being approved in a floodplain. Dr. George McCoy states in his
analysis that the information in the applicant's 100-Yeaz Floodplain Delineation mapping is not
correct. It does not appear to have been verified in anyway. I want the information verified to be
assured that silt ponds, fuel, equipment and the entire mine site is not in the floodway or floodplain.
In the event of a 100-year flood or even a 50-year flood, I will be "affected" by contamination of
the river, contamination of my private water well and destruction of my recreational pleasures
downsveam from the potential disaster.
As it also relates to the floodplain, I object to application approval of the mine site and its use of
fuel, oil and other contaminants that may enter the wateRable from which my water supply may
come. The applicant cannot ensure adequate protection of ground water quality within [he affected
land and surrounding area in the event of leaking trucks or unintentional spill of contaminants
being used at the site. I want assurance that the mine site and its contaminants are not located in
the floodway or floodplain. I want DMG to demand and scrutinize the applicant's plan for
preventing contaminants used (notjust stored) at the mine site from entering the groundwater.
I object to application approval of the mine when there is unknown potential for impacts to the
groundwater. I know I am slightly downstream from the mine site and that no one has done a
comprehensive evaluation of the alluvial aquifer that will be mined and dewatered. Although I am
more than 600 feet from the mine site, I believe that I will be "affected" when 750,000 gallons of
water is taken from the watertable and my well dries out for even a part of the summer. This may
cause material injury to me and by neighbors who own and operate private wells in the town of
Milner.
I object to application approval of the mine when water drawdown affects wetlands, cottonwood
trees and other riparian vegetation that provides healthy habitat for wildlife. I will be "affected"
when trees die and wildlife moves elsewhere. I love nature and this loss will be a cause of pain and
suffering for me when the mine desvoys their habitat and they leave.
