The nitrogen, as ammonium nitrate, was
added in split applications, one-half in November 1976 and the remainder
in May 1977.
The subplots were broadcast seeded with a mixture of native and
introduced grasses, fortis and shrubs in November 1976. The seed was
applied at a rate of 12.8 kg of pure live seed per hectare (634 PLS per
m2) and raked lightly to turn the seed under. Table 4 contains the
complete mixture for the Main Plot. The appropriate mulch was then
applied to the designated subplots (Figure 4).
Species Evaluation Plot. Two rows of 40 plant species were
seeded in two replications with three 15 foot rows per replication.
Nitrogen was applied at a rate of 66 kg N per hectare and phosphorus
at a rate of 220 kg P205 per hectare before seeding was performed. The
species seeded are contained in Table 5.
Slope Plats. These plots were constructed in October 1977 on a
southeast-facing slope of deep mine waste material (Figure 5). One
plot is graded on a 3:1 slope and the second is graded to 1.5:1. The
three treatments used are as follows:
• ~
