3

An Analysis of Variance (ADV) was performed on the field data to test
•
the value of gypsum versus no gypsum applications at the Allen Mine and any
significant differences between vegetation responses to various treatments at
all three operations. In conjunction, Tukey's Honestly Significant Difference
test (HS D) was run on mean treatment values across all replicates to identify
those treatments responsible for significant differences occurring at p ~ .10.
Six random soil cores, taken to a depth of 10 cm, were gathered from
C
each treatment, mixed thoroughly, and used to represent the surface soil con-
ditions for that subplot. Each sample was analyzed by the Soil Testing Labo-
ratory at Colorado State University for pH, soluble salts, organic matter,
total nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, iron, copper,
manganese, and texture. Soil tests were used to help explain differences in
plant responses to various treatments and to identify any changes in physical
and chemical properties of the waste materials since their amendments in
1976.
Annual precipitation was measured at all sites using a IJational Weather
Service Standard Type 8 Inch Rain and Snow Gage. Additional information was
gathered from U.S. Weather Bureau stations near each mine.
Qualitative Measurements of Species Evaluation and Slope Plots
Species Evaluation Plots and Slope Plots (at Monarch and Allen) ;,ere
qualitatively sampled. Species composition, percent cover, and plant •,igor
were noted.
