• 2.04.11 Fish and Wildlife Resources Information
The Division of Wildlife supplied the Operator a report of the important fish
and wildlife resources within the surface areas to be affected by the
underground mining operation. By its letter dated December 21, 1995, the
Division of Wildlife informed the Operator that the proposed mine facilities
are located in heavily used critical range for deer and elk and the cliffs in the
area are possible nesting and/or roosting sites for all species of raptors found
in the area. The Division's letter is located in Appendix III, Exhibit 9.
Map 37, Wildlife, presents the location of severe winter range, winter
concentration areas, winter range, summer range and migration patterns for
mule deer. The map presents the same information for elk with the addition
of a production area. Bald eagle winter concentration areas and winter
range is also shown on the map.
The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, by its letter dated October 23, 1995,
furnished a list of endangered species which may be present in the permit
and surrounding area. The Federally Listed species included the Peregrine
• falcon, Bald eagle, Southwestern willow flycatcher, Colorado squawfish,
Razorback sucker, Bonytail chub and Humpback chub. A threatened and
endangered species survey of the permit and adjacent area was performed
by Enviro25 Environmental Services Inc. The survey concludes that the
proposed mine development will have no significant effect on the threatened
and endangered avian species. The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service letter
and the Enviro25 report are presented in Exhibit III, Tab 9.
Exhibit III, Tab 9 also presents the results of a May 25, 2000 T & E survey
conducted by Wildlife Habitat & Natural Resource Specialists. The survey
did not find any threatened or endangered species or habitat in the study
area with the exception of three golden eagles which were noted flying
through the area on several occasions.
The mine development could impact the endangered fish species by
degrading water quality or by depleting the flow in the upper Colorado River.
Surface water drainage from the mine facilities is controlled by three
sediment ponds. Because of the surface water drainage control, no
significant water quality degradation is expected to occur.
•
PR-O6 2.04 - 65 - os/oi
!i PPt?ovEl~
~/is~o
