2.04,9 <br />physical, fertility and salinity characteristics presented in Exhibit 7, the A and <br />B horizon are suitable for salvage. <br />Field investigation of Map unit 6 shows the soil has virtually no profile. The <br />thickness of the A horizon averaged only 1.0". The soil is shallow with a <br />combined A and B horizon depth that ranges from 8" to 8.5". Laboratory <br />tests show this soil is a silty clay loam and red brown in color. Based on the <br />soil's physical, fertility and salinity characteristics presented in Exhibit 7, the <br />A and B horizon are suitable for salvage. <br />Permeability of Torriorthents is moderate to rapid, and available water <br />capacity is moderate to low. Depth to bedrock limits rooting depth, but tree <br />roots commonly penetrate fractures in the rock. Surface runoff is rapid. <br />Surface stoniness helps to prevent water erosion. Mass wasting is common <br />in this map unit. <br />The soils in this complex have only limited value for grazing and are used <br />mainly for wildlife habitat and recreation. Vegetative cover is needed to <br />control runoff and erosion. This map unit provides cover and escape for <br />wildlife. Deer commonly feed on the sunny slopes during winter. <br />Because of surface stoniness and slope, the soils in this complex are <br />unsuited to crops and seedbed preparation and drilling of seed for pasture <br />plantings on depleted native range or in cleared areas are generally not <br />practical. A limited degree of success can be expected by broadcasting <br />seed late in summer or early in fall. Siberian wheatgrass, western <br />wheatgrass, Indian ricegrass, and crested wheatgrass are adapted species. <br />Good pasture management must be practiced to protect the soil from erosion <br />and to provide grazing for livestock. <br />The area to be disturbed by the surface operations and facilities at the <br />loadout site were segregated into three map units numbered 7 through 9. <br />Map Unit 7 (60) -Potts loam, 1 to 6 percent slopes. This is a well drained <br />soil. It formed in alluvial sediment derived from sandstone and is on <br />valley-filling slopes alluvial fans.
